Sunday, 23rd October - Newbury Weekly News, Over 80s Christmas parcel fund

Supported by the local community, the Newbury Weekly News has been giving Christmas Food Parcels to local residents aged 80 and over for more than 100 years.

I've just sent a donation by cheque to the organiser. Each food parcel contains a Christmas dinner, tea and a few special treats, and last year in 2010 we distributed more than 2,200 parcels, for which we had to raise £15,000. MrM works for a local charitable trust that has made a substantial donation to this good cause and I nagged and nagged and nagged to see if he could ask if they could be put into reusable bags instead of plastic bags - I believe this is happening, so that's even more good news.

For some of the elderly residents in Newbury, Hungerford and Thatcham the delivery of the Christmas Food Parcel and some company for a few minutes is what they
look forward to each Christmas.
